The History of ENJO

ENJO began in Austria in 1990, the brainchild of Johannes Engl who together with his father pioneered the concept of fibre technology.

This work was driven by a vision to minimise the daily use of harmful chemicals, make a positive contribution to reducing land and waste pollution and to produce better results with less effort.

Today, over 15 years later, ENJO is an internationally recognised brand, distributed in over 25 countries worldwide.

ENJO makes cleaning a lifestle choice not a chore!

1985 – The Countdown to Success

The ENJO success story starts in spring 1985: Friedrich Engl, a pragmatic, innovative entrepreneur, by chance observes an oil accident on the Lake of Constance, which shores form the border between Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Experiencing the fight against the oil slick, Friedrich Engl develops the idea that should make it possible in future to avoid usage of aggressive chemistry and destructive cleaning agents for the purpose of remedying such extreme pollutions. Owing to his years of experience in the textile industry, Friedrich Engl designed a pioneering technical solution on the basis of textile fibrous tissue within the following five years.

1990 - The First Seven Gloves

The life planning of Friedrich Engl’s son Johannes Engl has dramatically changed between 1985 and 1990. He starts to present his father’s invention in terms of fibre cloths for the food industry. The first day, Johannes sells seven “cleaning gloves” and is naturally very proud. Owing to the son’s sales talent and his mother’s and girlfriend’s support – the two ladies sew thousands of gloves – the innovation meets enthusiastic users all over Austria.

1991 – The ENJO Direct Marketing

Encouraged by the first selling record of the ENJO fibres, Johannes Engl founded the ENJO manufacturing company (Produktionsgesellschaft m.b.H) on 24 October 1991. He then established the “ENJO direct” sales strategy in Austria and accordingly, the ENJO way towards the future. Johannes Engl finally decides to sell the products by the use of a direct selling distribution system. He is convinced that the personal presentation of the ENJO products serves as the key to success. From the beginning on, the environmentally friendly cleaning system finds great approval among households, trade, industry and public institutions.

1992 – Floorcleaner and Combiwiper

During the early ENJO years Johannes Engl already was customer-oriented. This results in the introduction of the “Floorcleaner” and “Combiwiper”. For the first time, ENJO combines the ENJO fibre with mechanical parts – and accordingly, the first ENJO cleaning tools are developed. At the same time, ENJO also reaches Scandinavian households. Denmark, Norway and Iceland are the first countries on the “ENJO map”.

1993 – The ENJO Bodyline

Owing to the introduction of personal care stories, the ENJO assortment is extended. The “Bodyline”, which consists of completely natural ingredients, enjoys particularly great popularity with female customers, and therefore, an export drive starts in 1993. The ENJO products are established in the whole Scandinavian area, above all in Sweden. Central Europe, the Czech Republic and East Austria join the distributor family.

1994 – The First International Meeting.

In the former head office in Maeder (Austria), the Europe-wide ENJO family meets for the first time. 150 consultants from 10 countries exchange their knowledge and their experiences and develop new strategies together. It is the aim to establish relations between company, consultants and customers so that everyone profits. Since then, Johannes Engl invites them to the meeting every year to the most beautiful places throughout the world.

1995 – The New Image

The fantastic success, the great growth and the enthusiasm of customers lead to a careful revision of the ENJO image. By doing so, the high standards which Johannes Engl demands on his enterprise are revised and increased once more. The new company logo underlines the fact that ENJO has grown up now.

1997 – Synergy and Farewell

Having started in 1994 with the international exchange of experiences, it is now continued in a professional way, arranged as the “1st Synergy Meeting” abroad. Till this day, the event in Kindos, Turkey, is regarded as an important milestone within the ENJO history. Moreover, the award of the “Eco-Profit” Audit is possibly even more important. ENJO is awarded this certificate for high environmental standards as one of the first Austrian companies. Unfortunately, Friedrich Engl, the founder and great mentor, dies in December 1997 which casts and especially sad shadow on another successful year.

1998 – Clean the World

For the first time, ENJO shows with self-assurance its global right with the new slogan “Clean the World”. For a long time, ENJO has been developing into a leading company in its field. The corporate and product philosophy takes effect in most countries and continents. No matter if in Iceland or Australia – more and more ENJO customers are convinced that the ENJO fibre, only used with water, works perfectly for cleaning.

1999 – Career with ENJO

The results of the strategic “Synergy Meetings” are realized in operative business objectives. A unique career system is introduced globally for ENJO employees. Simultaneously, a presentation concept for ENJO demos is adapted and standardized right down to the smallest detail. New Zealand and Germany are the latest flags to be added to the ENJO globe.

2000 – ISO Certificates

Johannes Engl and his Team qualify for two significant certificates: ISO 9001 for the quality of the company and ISO 14001 for its contribution towards environmental sustainability. Both certificates are renewed at regular intervals. Along with the new Consultants in Faroe Island, ENJO counts nearly 2,000 colleagues worldwide.

2001 – Australia Booms

In record time, the Australian ENJO team has managed to exceed the barrier of 1,000 Consultants. “Down Under” is by far the most successful market for ENJO.

2002 – New Production Plant

The world increasingly asks for ENJO products and thus, a new, modern and larger production plant is necessary. Johannes Engl moves the production to Hohenems (Austria) and consequently gains more space for the head office.

2003 - ENJO Goes USA

The traditional “Synergy Meeting” takes place in Sweden and Johannes Engl sets the programme for the worldwide market leadership of his unique business concept: “ENJO goes USA” – and aims to reach a tremendous customer growth in record time. Meanwhile, more than 3,000 ENJO Consultants work to qualify for the participation in the Synergy Meeting 2004.
